Classic Car Insurance Basics

The most basic element of your motor insurance to choose is how wide you want the cover to be. There are three main levels of cover.

A brief explanation of each type of cover follows.

Comprehensive

Includes all of the cover you get with Third Party Fire and Theft, as well as cover for accidental damage to your car. These policies also tend to offer you cover for stereos, windscreens, personal accident, death as well as personal possessions cover or even cover while you take the car away if you have a driving holiday.

Don't be fooled by its name though - like all insurance policies, it will contain exclusions and one comprehensive policy can contain very different levels of cover from the next - just be careful to choose the one that's right for you.

Third party, fire and theft

Unlike comprehensive insurance, this type of policy only covers damage to your car by fire or theft. Perhaps worth considering if your car wouldn't cost much to replace if you had to.

Third party only

This is the minimum legal requirement for cover to enable you to drive your car lawfully on the road. It doesn't cover any damage to your car, but it does cover you if you damage anyone else's car or injure them.

'Comprehensive' is the most expensive, but gives you the widest cover, and then getting progressively cheaper there is 'Third Party Fire and Theft' cover and then just 'Third Party' only cover.

Only you can make the choice as to what is the most appropriate cover for your car, but in making that choice, you should consider how much each costs compared with the cost of having to repair or replace it. For example, you might consider that comprehensive cover that costs £700 is too expensive on a car that is only worth £850, but if you choose one of the other, cheaper, cover options, could you afford to repair or replace it if the claim weren't covered?
